Statement

From an early age, I have always had a passion for drawing, and everything which involves creativity. For me, art is an opportunity to communicate my thoughts. The decision of studying architecture was natural to me because aside from loving art and design, I am charmed by the creation of the buildings and spaces around us. I have always been amazed by how architects are constantly looking for new ways of innovation, and I have always wanted to learn more about the work of architects; how buildings are designed and built, and how design ideas emerge. I am also very interested in learning more about sustainability. I am certain that Manchester School of Architecture is the ideal place for me. It is known to be among the best Architecture Schools in the United Kingdom, and I believe that the course will push me beyond limits and encourage me to develop my creative potential and critical thinking, as well as give me the skills needed for the world of work. The city of Manchester itself is an exciting place, being multicultural and extremely diverse, therefore I feel that it provides an excellent environment in which to study and live. To further influence my choice, Sir Norman Foster, in my opinion one of the top modern architects of today, studied at the Manchester School of Architecture. This only emphasizes the good standards of the school.

I recently visited the new Council building in Rochdale, which houses the municipal offices and library. I was utterly amazed by the modern, futuristic shapes of the interior. From the first floor, the view of the elegant, curved lines gives the interior a spectacular contemporary feel. The glass on the windows eliminates any sense of enclosure; it allows constant contact with the outside, whilst within the safety of the inside. At night, the building is reborn with the lighting from the interior glowing through the glass. I found the interior of the building very similar to Zaha Hadid's designs.

My favorite building is the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. I admire Frank Gehry's rejection of clean lines, and his embracement of de-constructivism. The random bold shapes of the museum make it an astonishing sight. Although in theory its shapes should dramatize the building, the titanium used blends in perfectly with the river. The museum harmonizes perfectly with its surroundings, while maintaining its quirky aspect.

An architectural work I would love to experience is the Burj Al Arab Hotel. Its imitation of a ship sail is perfect for the beach landscape, and the white and blue tones used reflect perfectly the peaceful qualities of the sea. More amazing is the grandness of the interior. It is truly an architectural masterpiece.
